Why does bathroom remodeling cost so much?!

Remodeling Q&A

Answers and insight into the remodeling experience from Simply Baths & Showcase Kitchens owner, Barry Miller

You Asked:

Why does remodeling cost so much?

The Answer:

Consumers often underestimate the amount of work involved in a bath remodel. Several different trades are necessary to complete the job, and each often has a relatively low individual cost. But when the items are added together, they quickly yield a much larger total cost. Examples include demo, renting a dumpster, plumbing, electrical, sheetrock, carpentry, tile, shower doors and painting. There’s a lot of complexity behind the scenes, especially in the plumbing, electrical and framing – all the more if you’re changing the location of things or expanding your original space!

Another factor is that the cost for raw materials like copper, paint and sheetrock has skyrocketed in the last few years. (So has the cost of gas and delivery.) This results in a cost increase from our vendors, which we unfortunately have to extend to our customers, as well.

As for fixtures, quality products are more costly than generic ones due to smaller production runs and better raw materials and functionality. They offer a more stylized fit in your bathroom, and translate into a more seamless finish and better overall appearance.

Insider Tips:

Be as upfront as possible about your bathroom remodeling budget and priorities. The more we know, the better we can design and suggest products to your needs and your budget.

How can this translate into savings? Rather than choosing a tiled shower pan, opt for a pre-made one, which doesn’t significantly change the look or functionality, but you could save $1,000 or more. Or, you can use a porcelain tile that looks like natural stone instead of an actual natural stone. This could save you about 50 percent of the tile cost. This way, you can save the bulk of your budget for the features that really matter to you.

Some Toilet Humor (for Your iPhone)

Hi everyone,

You may have eaten your share of hot dogs over Memorial Day weekend, but did you know that you can flush four of them (without buns and condiments) down the American Standard Evolution toilet? Don’t believe it? You can try it for yourself – VIRTUALLY, please – on American Standard’s new “Toilet Challenge.” This free iPhone/iPad app allows you to try flushing a variety of items down American Standard’s performance toilet models. Among the items are sliders, chicken nuggets and orange peels as well as (flushable) cat litter and cotton balls.

All you have to do is scroll the menu to select a toilet model and an item to flush – and then watch the pop-up video see if it works. It sort of brings us back to childhood days when it’s fun to see if a Barbie doll or an unwanted apple would go down…. (Does anyone else think it would be kind of cool if they threw in some stuff that didn’t flush?)

You can also get product information on each of the toilets AND have access to Professor Toilet, who offers useful conservation tips such as, “If you cut your shower by three minutes, you save 7.5 gallons of water.” You can also get up-to-the-minute toilet news, like the availability of a hands-free dual flush model. (See here: http://ow.ly/52zzt)

As the app notes before the flushing demos, “Please do not try this at home. Flushing items like these can cause severe damage to your plumbing.”

“Toilet Challenge” is available now in the App Store. Enjoy, and happy flushing.

Wall outlet – with USB!

If you’re running out of room to plug in all of your electronics, the U-Socket may be just the solution you need. It’s a double outlet plug with two built-in USB ports that can power any device that’s capable of charging via a 5V power adapter. Not only does this product eliminate the bulk and clutter of AC adapters, it’s energy-efficient as well. It’s designed to only output power through the USB port if something is connected to it, and can save the average homeowner up to $25 per year in reduced energy costs. It might save you a little time, too: when everything is charging in the same place, it’s harder to forget something when you’re running out the door. Well, at least in theory.

Shelton master bath remodel

Here we transformed a bland, builder-finished master bath into a stylish, luxurious retreat…

The old tub deck was altered to incorporate a seat in the new larger, frameless shower. Instead of regular body jets, the homeowners chose Kohler’s water tiles, which are inset in the shower tile. And to help make baths last longer in the hydrotherapy tub, it’s equipped with a water heater. The Brown Onyx tub deck and countertops, marble vessel sinks and mirrors add a touch of elegance, and the vanity bench offers a convenient spot to get ready for the day.

The new master bath has the same square footage and general layout, with contemporary features, more storage space and plenty of personality!

And, some exciting news for us… This master bath will appear in the spring issue of Signature Kitchens and Baths magazine! Stay tuned.
